The start of 2022 saw the unveiling of a new collection on Veridian for Tufts University, titled Newspapers @ Tufts. This is a digital collection of thousands of issues of their three major student newspapers, the Tufts Weekly, the Tufts Observer and the Tufts Daily.
We commenced discussions for this project with the Tufts Digital Collections and Archives team mid-2021, with completion scheduled for the end of the year. Tufts were looking for a platform more suitable for their content with newspaper-specific features that allowed for easy, searchable access to their past student publications.
Technically, the collection was straightforward to bring to life. The Tufts Digital Collections and Archives team provided TIFFs and we generated page-level METS/ALTO, thus using our digitisation service to build their collection.
The digital collection currently contains 6,326 issues of the three student publications totalling around 77,806 pages, with Tufts Digital Collections and Archives working on digitising the final batch to bring it up to the present day. We’re thrilled to have assisted Tufts in making past issues of their student publications readily accessible to the wider Tufts community.
