Veridian has supported growing digital collections for more than 20 years. During that time, we have continually refined the platform as collection sizes, search requirements, usage patterns and audience expectations have evolved.
The platform supports specialist collections containing tens of thousands of pages as well as large institutional collections containing millions. Its largest current implementation provides access to more than 100 million pages.
Scalability is not a one-time configuration. It requires software that can handle growing data volumes, together with ongoing monitoring, performance tuning and appropriately sized hosting infrastructure.
Many platforms can handle 50,000 or even 500,000 pages, but far fewer are designed to support collections that grow into the millions, as Veridian does.
Today’s users have been conditioned by modern search engines, so they expect search, browsing and viewing tools to remain reliable regardless of a collection’s size. They may not know how many records sit behind an interface, but they do notice when performance noticeably degrades.

Digital collections rarely remain static after launch. Institutions add content, improve metadata, introduce features and attract new users over time. As a result, a collection containing millions of pages is inherently more complex than one containing thousands, with larger indexes, more concurrent users and more demanding search and browsing patterns.

The LLMC digital legal archive provides access to more than 100 million pages through the Veridian platform. Its collection includes more than 180,000 volumes across approximately 40,000 titles, covering material from over 185 countries and in 65 languages.
This implementation demonstrates Veridian’s ability to support both substantial data volumes and complex multilingual, multi-jurisdictional collections.
Software and hosting infrastructure both affect collection performance. Veridian is designed to manage large page volumes and search indexes efficiently, while the hosting environment provides the computing, memory, storage and network capacity required to serve users.
A scalable application can still experience performance constraints if its infrastructure is not provisioned for actual demand. Conversely, additional infrastructure cannot fully compensate for inefficient software. The two must be planned and monitored together.
An everyday way to think about this is a supermarket self-checkout. Veridian’s software is the checkout system itself — designed to process items quickly and efficiently. The hosting infrastructure is the number of self-checkouts operating. If customer numbers increase but the number of checkouts stays the same, queues form — not because the checkout system is inefficient, but because capacity hasn’t been adjusted.
For this reason, Veridian offers managed hosting built on Amazon Web Services, where infrastructure can be sized and adjusted to meet demand. Some clients choose to use their own hosting infrastructure, and in those cases we work closely with them to ensure it is appropriately provisioned.
