LLMC: A Global Digital Legal Archive Revitalised on Veridian
2:54

LLMC preserves at-risk legal and government records from around the world. In 2025, LLMC launched its next-generation digital archive on Veridian, offering faster access, improved usability, and an inclusive design for researchers everywhere.

Founded in 1976, the Law Library Microform Consortium (LLMC) is a nonprofit network of libraries dedicated to preserving aging and at-risk legal and government materials from around the world.

Over nearly five decades, LLMC has grown into one of the world’s most comprehensive digital legal archives, helping institutions reclaim shelf space while providing long-term, online access to millions of pages of rare and historically significant documents.

While LLMC operates primarily as a member-based archive, supporting libraries and research institutions globally, it also maintains an Open Access Collection that’s freely available to the public—ensuring broader access to legal and governmental history.

Expanding access through global collaboration

Through its collaboration with East View Information Services, LLMC has made a vast body of legal and government materials digitally accessible, including:

  • Over 100 million pages of digitized content, with just over 4.5 million included in their Open Access Collection.
  • Over 180,000 volumes and 40,000 titles.
  • Coverage across more than 185 countries.
  • Materials available in over 65 languages.
  • Documents dating back as far as the 1060s.

Together, these organisations have helped digitise, organise, and share an extraordinary body of legal and governmental history, transforming how people discover and use archival information.

Modernising a legacy platform

First launched in 2003, LLMC’s long-standing digital archive system — LLMC Digital — had served its global network of libraries and researchers for more than two decades. By 2024, however, the platform had reached its limits. LLMC needed a more powerful, user-friendly, and future-ready solution to support ongoing growth, global access, and long-term sustainability.

LLMC and East View selected Veridian to host its next-generation digital archive. The new Veridian-powered LLMC platform launched in May 2025, delivering:

  • A modern interface with faster performance and intuitive navigation.
  • Enhanced usability and search tools to improve discovery and engagement.
  • An inclusive design approach that reflects LLMC’s commitment to accessibility.

“I've been looking for some of this material for weeks and your site it's taken me five minutes to find… I am beyond impressed with this service!” Jack Keiffaber, Harvard Law Student

The upgrade has enhanced the overall user experience while maintaining LLMC’s high standards for data preservation and accessibility. With Veridian as its digital foundation, LLMC is now better equipped to serve its members — and the wider public — for years to come.
