According to a 1910 article in The New Era (Walden) (Vol. 4, No. 51, February 17), Valentine’s Day created chaos for the postal service.

Many senders went to great lengths to hide their identities — disguising their handwriting and using every trick they could think of. The result? Countless illegible addresses and a surge of undelivered mail.

Their final destination was the "Dead Letter Office" — the resting place for valentines that never reached their intended recipient. 

A reminder that even over a century ago, Valentine’s Day came with mystery, mischief… and the occasional lost love letter.
